beautiful and mythical South American city of gold sought after almost a century, the conquistadors Pizzaro in Cortez. This name is unique for a club that is now known as the Eldorado Polo Club. Located in the hot, flat desert of Coachella Valley is located between the small towns of La Quinta and Indio, California snuggled against the San Jacinto Mountains. Some call it a tropical paradise. Another oasis in the desert.
Polo come to America at the turn of the 20th century and millennium years sport took root in America. In the West first became popular in the area of San Diego, where he played on the island of Coronado. The desert has become a popular destination for many famous Hollywood celebrities, and the second beginning 20 years earlier, when we know that only a few that La Quinta has become popular in its own right.
Until the early 1950s at the Polo Palm Springs began to attract the interest of Polo players from around the country. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, with whom my mother and I had the honor and pleasure to share the moment with him and Mrs. Eisenhower in his limousine, truly brought fame and attention to the desert.
original fields were located much closer to Palm Springs, near the site of today's Palm Springs International Airport. Then, due to urban sprawl and increase property values and the club had to move to the next stop is Palm Desert, and from there it's third and current location in La Quinta, where I visited a second time. Once again, the hunger for development and the same increase in property values of nearby Palm Desert location, now the Vintage Club, had happened twice before it is typical for any activity that requires a large amount of land and attracts a lot of people and interests.
during my visits was the 1986 U.S. Open Polo Tournament hosted by the Prince of Wales, Prince Charles, who attended the ceremony, played with courage and a host of magnificent gala as a tribute to the progress of Eldorado Polo Club and the U.S. Open as he did several times after that. More recently, Prince Harry, Harry Wales as he knows that his Special Forces comrades in the Royal Maines and third in line to the throne of England, hosted and played in a charity tournament at the club. Club hosted many additional charitable not the least of which is the College of the Desert is located in Palm Desert for a club that raises tens of thousands of dollars a year. Perhaps the most well known of these is charity Barbara Sinatra Skins Polo Game, which supports charities for abused and neglected children.
My most recent visit to the polo fields, which incidentally only two hours drive from Los Angeles and a half hours from Palm Springs, was a surprise. On my first visit to the club as a child there were only two courts and a few players. Now, as the winter capital of the nation water polo, because of the significant time there are twelve fields, ten owned by the Club and two leased from the nearby Empire Polo Club, and during my visit there were twenty nine teams play consecutively in three forms, the result of low, medium and high scoring event with an eclectic group of players, it is indeed a "players' club, as it was from the beginning, and it includes all the family members including children. All in all my recent visit to the California desert reinforced my interest, appreciation and love "paradise in the wilderness," and I know that you will want to play or watch.
